Ohhh wedding vows. The moment when you commit to your person for better or for worse, in sickness and in heath, and well… you know the rest! We’ve all heard the same vows over and over again and they’re so important, however, I personally am a fan of couples who write their own wedding vows. There is so much you can do and say in that short amount of time that will mean the world to your partner.
Your wedding vows give you the chance to tell your story and give guests an inside look at your relationship. This is the part where they all go “ohhhhh” and fully understand why you two chose to commit the rest of your lives to one another. But, your vows also can be private. YOU get to decide how much you want to share with your guests and what you’d prefer to keep to yourselves. When you choose to write your own vows, they’re important. Hiring a videographer is a great way to really capture that moment in real time and have that memory for years to come as a great reminder of why you two chose to say “I Do!”
Now, writing your vows may seem a little daunting but no fear, it’s not quite as hard as it sounds! There’s a few tips I’ve learned over the years that can help you write your own wedding vows.
Write it ALLLL out! The best way to say what you mean is to say it all. You can always chop things down but consider a first and second draft. Get all your words out and then make them sound good!
Don’t be afraid to let yourself shine through. There’s a reason your partner fell in love with you so go ahead and say what you mean. It’ll be so much more meaningful when it sounds like it came straight from your heart.
When you write your own wedding vows, it’s important to go with your gut. So, say what feels right. Don’t worry about what anyone else has to say because only you know your relationship and what is inside your heart.
Stand in the mirror and talk to yourself. You’ll feel a little nervous on the big day so be sure to practice your words. You’ll be less likely to stumble and more prepared for the moment when you choke up! Trust me… it’ll happen!
Okay so the way to write your own wedding vows may seem easy, but ummm what do you say?! Well, there are a lot of things you can say when you’re promising to love your partner forever. So, let me give you a few ideas on what you should definitely try and include in your wedding vows.
What’s that vacation you took on that you’ll never forget? Or the moment that was embarrassing but is now hilarious? Share it! Share it with your friends and family, they’ll laugh and cry and cherish the memories with you!
There is a reason you’re going to be standing there in front of all your favorite people. You fell in love. And that is AMAZING. Love is such a special gift so be sure to share the times you knew you were in love with them. Not only will it remind your partner but it’ll invite your guests into your relationship.
You know that forever and always part? Yeah, you’ll want to include that! Make promises to your partner and make sure you mean it. Whether you promise to always have dinner together or take trip together to somewhere new, these promises are what make the vows so much more meaningful.
Don’t be afraid to cry! Or laugh, or just smile ear to ear. Share the way you’re feeling. Your excitement, your nerves, anything that makes you feel for your partner. Let. Them. Know!
In sickness and in health, richness and poor. There are tough parts of marriage. Everyone goes through rough patches and your partner needs to know that you’ll stand by them through it all. At the end of the day you love your partner for who they are, so be willing to bend in order to allow your marriage to not break.
I love wedding vows! I mean, they make me tear up Every. Single. Time. And I know you’ll be writing some good ones, I cannot wait to hear what you come up with! Take everything that you have in your heart and put it on paper, the words you have to say will mean the world to your partner and your friends and family will be thrilled to hear what you have to say.
